SOUTHWICK — School officials said Tuesday evening that the burst pipe that has shut down parts of Powder Mill School was part of a heating system, and the hot water caused moisture damage to parts of the school.

Stephan Presnal, director of finance and operations, told the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School Committee that a pipe containing water as hot as 180 degrees had burst on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 16, though it remained undiscovered, because of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, until the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 18, when a custodian entered the school in the morning.

Presnal said that remote monitoring systems had given no indication that anything was wrong. He said that air pressure levels were measured to have been “more than sufficient” in preventing a pipe breach, even during the stretch of extreme cold. It is still unclear to officials how the pipe was able to burst, given that information.
